How I Trained My Hair to Only be Washed Once a Week

Hi, all! I hope you’re having a good day. It’s Friday, so that always helps one’s outlook.

Today I’m going to share some tips on how I trained my hair to only be washed once a week. Yes, you read that right; I only wash my hair one day a week.

Here’s some background on my hair: it’s rather fine and thin and tends to grow to my shoulders and stop. I do balayage color on it and get it trimmed every 7-8 weeks. While it’s mostly naturally straight, it holds a curl pretty well, too.

Without further ado, here are some ways I’ve trained it to last longer between washes:

  1. Dry shampoo is your best friend. I’ve tried a lot of dry shampoos over the years, but this one is my all time favorite. I recommend getting dry shampoo with a tint because after several days of using a white-based one, your hair will get a white sheen (which no one wants). Be warned though, when you do wash your hair, the water will look “dirty” as you rinse, but at least you’ll know when you hair is clean.

2. Curl your hair with a wand. Curled hair lasts longer between washes. Additionally, I’ve discovered that this curling wand makes my curls hold better than a standard curling iron. I usually touch up my curls every other day throughout the week, if I’m wearing my hair down.

3. Use a teasing comb/brush. Since I have thin, fine hair, I have to “fake” my volume. By spraying my roots with body building spray or hairspray and teasing them, it hides any grease that might begin to build up after a few days. This is the teasing comb I use.

4. Keep your hair as dry as possible. When showering, I wear my hair in a bun to keep it out of the water. You could also use a shower cap or headband to accomplish this. Also, if you workout (which I do), and your hair gets wet from sweat, let it air dry or blow dry it before you use dry shampoo.

5. Change your part. I’ve recently discovered that if I change my part mid-week, I can get another day in between washes.

6. Use accessories. Hair accessories are all the rage right now. I like to wear headbands, and on the weekends, I like to add a cap or fedora. This is a simple solution to hide dirty or oily hair.

7. Wear your hair up. Usually, by the end of the week, I have to wear my hair up. However, there are so many more options than just a standard ponytail. I wear a “hair piece” when my hair is getting toward the end of its “life.” This item has been a game changer for me.

8. Be patient. It takes time to train your hair to last longer between washes. For years, I washed it every other day, but after Isaac was born in 2018, I started pushing my hair to go longer between washes. I think my current record is nine days.
